was experiencing the same issue today on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS

KMail Version 5.24.5 (23.08.5)
Qt Version 5.15.13 (kompiliert gegen 5.15.13)

the solution with moving the "~/.local/share/local-mail/trash" folder (e.g. to
"trash_old" did work for me.
After successful start of KMail, I quit it again and was even able to move the
original folder back (from "trash_old" to "trash") without having KMail crash
anymore
