It does seem like a theme/UI issue but I tried changing both kmail's colors and
system theme/appearance settings but nothing seems to help (restarted both
kmail and plasma).

The message preview (as well as opening a message in a new window) is empty - I
cannot select any text whatsoever.

I also tried removing/reinstalling the themes but the issue persists.

Any other ideas?
