This is likely a duplicate to

Bug 422336 - kmail: the access and reading of the received messages is often
very slow 

in combination with

Bug 334209 - synchronizes folder contents during runtime needlessly

and

Bug 334216 - synchronizes folder with filesystem after downloading and
filtering mails needlessly

Means: It did this needless synchronization before, bug before the performance
regression in Akonadi 5.14.1 (aka 20.04) it was much quicker and thus did not
block out KMail so long.
