Your idea is really good. It would be helpful.

Currently you can make sure that kmail doesn't change the background color of
messages by checking this option:
Settings -> Appearance -> Colours
Check "Do not change the color of the original HTML email"

With it active, if the email has a white background, it will be displayed
correctly.
