I set up a VirtualBox machine with a clean install of KDE neon and got the same
enigmatic error message.

Connecting to the IMAP server of a different e-mail provider works, so it is
something specific to my setup (which does not make it any better for me...).
What makes me wonder is that it used to work for several years. Something
happened.
