Hi everybody, 
I'd like to confirm (should this help anyone else) I've been able to set up a
Gmail account by using PLAIN authentication and a password app from Google
Security Settings. 
Just setup the Gmail account inside Kmail normally, double check it does not
work, then manually change server to imap.gmail.com, set the password as above
said, change server settings to SSL-TLS port 993 auth PLAIN.
Worked for me.
