Thank you for your speedy response, glad to hear that work is ongoing.

Unfortunately I don't think the workaround will be successful - though very
happy to be contradicted.

I'm very new to Kontact/Kmail but I believe there are two ways to add mail
accounts - within the Configure - Kontact window select Accounts and you then
have an option to 'Add...' either 'Add Mail Account' or 'Custom Account' 

If you go for the first option 'Add Mail Account' then there is no option to
choose the PLAIN authentication method - it simply takes you through to the
previously posted dialogue which results in the error.

With the second option 'Custom Account' - when you enter details of a Gmail
account it greys out both the password and the authentication options.  See
attached screenshots.  Again you are back to the previous error.

I do use Google 2FA and have created an application specific password, but due
to the above 'greying' out there is nowhere to enter this.

My OS is Kubuntu 18.04 and Kontact is version 5.7.3.  I suspect there will be
no way for Gmail users to add accounts until the wider bug is corrected?
