I am using Leap 15, Kmail 5.7.3 
When I did change the password of POP, as the SMTP password is not updated
accordingly, the password was obviously wrong. 
However the error message you get is misleading saying: 
server error, message could not be sent. 

But it is a "Wrong Password or user, please check your settings" that would
have been a sensible message. 
The user cannot therefore distinguish if the error is on the user side or
server side.
