Hi Eric,

I suggest to ask in a forum of your distribution how to update to 
openSUSE Leap 42.2. It ships with KMail 5.3.x, not the newest, but still 
should fix at least some of your issues.

Manually updating packages from non-standard repositories is also 
possible, but only recommended for more experienced users.
