Create a akonadi_mbox_resource and link it to a large file in mbox format.
Then do a send/receive so that the file is read in Kmail. You can notice that
the akonadi_mbox_resource process take a huge amount of RAM.

In my case I noticed that with a mbox containing ~13000 emails and sized ~90
MB. The process  takes ~400MB of RAM. Because of that the computer starts
swapping.

I'm using debian9 (stable=stretch) and akonadi version is "Akonadi 5.2.2"
(taken from akonadictl -v)
