[Akonadi] [Bug 338571] Performance Regression: Folder synchronisation in Akonadi 16.08 (actually in any release, starting with KDE 4.14) very slow, compared to kMail from KDE 4.13.x

David, to me this appears an issue that is not directly related to folder
synchronisation speed although slow folder synchronisation speeds makes it
worse.

I think it is a mixture of

Bug 367892 - During folder synchronisation Akonadi blocks out other operations
like deleting or viewing mails

and probably needless folder synchronisations. I reported IMHO needless folder
synchronisations for maildir already in:

[Akonadi] [Bug 334209] New: synchronizes folder contents with filesystem on
switching folders needlessly

For IMAP I reported something similar in Bug 367892 mentioned above. Hitting
delete key to delete messages from IMAP folder here easily triggered a folder
synchronisation (what for?). I think this is also a candidate for a separate
bug report.

For IMAP servers these folder synchronisations are likely required as other
clients can update the IMAP account behind Akonadi. Yet, KMail should not block
on these.

Please try to separate different issues. I bet what would help you most would
be that Akonadi does not block on folder synchronisations. So I suggest you add
your finding there. Unfortunately there are quite a bunch of performance
related issues still left in Akonadi.
