mps, thank you for your report.  Sorry for the long delay in answering to it.
It is about a version of KMail which  is unmaintained. Thus closing.

While you are basically right about this, it is difficult to calculate the
exact space requirements of the database beforehand. Most people will have
migrated by now to an Akonadi based KMail as well.
