I have identified precisely the same behaviour.  Auto-complete works fine for
"recent addresses" and those "contacts found in your data" but does not seem to
complete from the (akonadi) address books.

Just to be clear, I am running Kubuntu 15.10, KMail 5.0.2 and KDE Frameworks
5.15.0.
