I just found a way to reproduce this bug.  I use GMail and have filters in
there that automatically add tags to email, but still leave that email in the
inbox.  If I then use KMail to sort through my inbox, I sometimes end up moving
the message to the folder corresponding to the tag that is already present.
This seems to toggle the issue of having multiple merge candidates, GMail has
the same id for the email, while KMail / Akonadi think they are two different
IDs who just happen to share the same remote ID.
I am not an IMAP / Akonadi expert, but it seems to me that these cases could be
merged relatively easily.  Both messages have the same remote ID, and they
should not be different in the views of the Akonadi cache.
