Hm, I do have that option here with the standard packages in openSUSE 13.2
(Kontact 4.14.6).
There are checkboxes in front of every top-level item in the left sidebar in
the Kontact settings, including knotes. If I untick the checkbox, knotes
disappears from Kontact.

What version of Kontact are you using? (see Help->About Kontact)
You specified "GIT (master)", but then openSUSE RPMs. Are you really using "GIT
(master)"? From which repo did you install the RPMs from?
