This could be worked around by deselecting first.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the definition on slow. If you want something fast
you better use another IMAP server.

Indeed, but in that case we could run STATUS after a SELECT that didn't return
UIDNEXT.
Anways, I'm not going to work on this any further.
