My work around for this was to comment out a line in kontactrc as follows:

[GrantleeTheme]
#grantlee-theme-name=example_fancy

Then restarted Kontact and both lines were gone and Contacts in Kontact was
working correctly again. I suspect this may have been upgrade cruft that needed
culling. Not sure though...
