Yes, would be one solution. I'm having my contacts on owncloud and using
categories there (same categories as for events).

Another solution would be to set category as a sub item of the folders:

 - Folder One
 - - Category A
 - - Category C
 - Folder Two
 - - Category A
 - - Category B
###################
