I do have the same behavior on my arch system after upgrade to kde 4.14.
So i tried a few things:
* downgrade akonadi -> kmail doesn't start anymore (fatal error)
* downgrade kdepim packages but leave akonadi latest -> same behavior as with
all on 4.14.
* downgrade akonadi -> things work again

Based on my findings, i think its an akonadi regression.
