Seems to be completely regressed resolved  bug for kmail 1.9.1 as follows:
 Bug 127696 - [PATCH] "Unable to complete LIST" operation with invalid messages
on server 

But I am not allowed to reopen it.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. try lo get messages from  upcmail.net
2.
3.
Actual Results:  
no LIST returned till timeout. 

Expected Results:  
to get list as of Mail in MAC OS X 10.9  do in most cases
