In the sense that the start-up order of nepomukfilewatch/nepomukfileindexer and 
akonadi_nepomuk_feeder is not guaranteed, yes it is necessary to check this 
condition at login when these processes are started.

How did you install the script? Was it by copy and paste or by moving the 
downloaded file?

This is standard Bash scripting and shouldn't present a syntax error unless 
the file is somehow corrupted.
