I have now confirmed this fault to my own satisfaction; I have stopped using
Kontact and am using Thunderbird instead.  Not only is the performance just as
it should be, but more to the point; CPU usage has dropped from 90-100% (on
both cores of an AMD Athlon) to less than 10% on both cores when the desktop is
idle.  Much of the time one core shows 0%.
