I have a similar problem with kde 4.10.3
sometimes it get stuck with "Retrieving folder contents" message for several
minutes before displaying the message.
by the way, I have tried to manually open the mbox file of a new message that
was stuck in kmail, and the file opened without a problem... so, no problem
accessing the file.
