I seem to be seeing something very similar -- though, no crashes or hangs so
far, and there appears to be a workaround -- switching to another folder and
coming back allows me to view the message where an error was triggered.

I see this several times in every session of work, since I moved to kmail2 with
the introduction of kmail 4.10.5 into Debian unstable. I reported it also
