I can confirm this problem with Akregator 1.6.6, both standalone and embedded.

The problem appeared after I edited 

~/.kde/share/apps/akregator/data/feeds.opml

to manually merge in outline-tags of another OS-instance. The added feeds
appeared in Akregator but the date columns of all feeds were gone. Deleting
akregatorrc recovered them.

A little side-observation: turning on and off of the date column changed the
length of the horizontal column slider by about a pixel.
