I also have very similar issues on 4.10.2 / Fedora 18. Often during the day, An
error is displayed eg "too many simultaneous connections". The only way to
"fix" is to go into the GMail web UI, details, and click sign out of all
sessions. Then restart Akonadi. 

I also have sometimes the long time to display messages that you report,
although it can be "fixed" by the same workaround as above.

It's a major issue for me too, as i'm using KMail for my professional email.
