I have the same problem on 4.8.4. Although I did not try to put .local as a
symbolic links but the akonadi subdirectory (or even parts of it) to avoid
duplication of email archives within the backup area of my system (as email are
stored on a IMAP server anyway).

However, I do not know whether there is another way around this problem using
configuration files pointing at different directory. This is a showstopper for
me...
