@Bernd Sorry for not having answered earlier.
The bug was discovered during a KMail bughunting weekend. It was one of many
glitches we found. Normally I'm not using KMail as my mail client.

I did indeed upgrade from 4.8.x to 4.9. no clean-install and I had this bug on
Sabayon Linux.
Now I'm using Chakra Linux with KDE 4.9.3 and can't reproduce the issue either
(although the profile folder is the same I was using before on Sabayon and KDE
4.9.0).
