At least in Dolphin I've seen most (all?) KIO errors are swallowed and shown in
the status bar, or via a notification area. So it seems the errors can be
intercepted somehow. Maybe this bug triggers a path that uses a simple popup
(maybe left there for debugging). 

It sounds to me like the popup should be removed if it originates in the KIO
handler, and replaced with proper error reporting
