I also have this problem, using 64-bit Magiea-2 Cauldron, Kmail 4.8.2

Also the 'Stop' button is never available, nor is any search progress info
displayed.

In adition, occasionally I get the baffling failure:

"Cannot get search result. Unknown error. Only resources can modify
remote identifiers." 

The lack of a reliable Find Messages is a potential showstopper for those
wanting to use KMail.
