I have to describe the buggy behavior in more detail as it depends on how you
work with Kmail. Backtraces refer to different situations. 
In the situations described below I had deactivated Nepomuk's E-Mail indexer
via  KDE's system-settings. I describe the situation for Opensuse's Factory
version of KDE 4.8.4. 

Situation 1: 
**************
You normally can start Kontact and switch there to Kmail after having started
KDE. I then go to one of my IMAP-Folders, klick on one of my mails and try to
reply or forward. Then Kontact just disappears from the screen -- without any
KDE crash report. The process for kontact disappears from the process list,
too. 

Situation 2:
***************
If I then try to start Kmail from the command line Kmail crashes. The shell
output is:

Situation 3:

Kmail may sometimes crash when one opens KDE  and then directyl starts KMail
from the command line. 
Sometimes however you may be able to start Kmail from the command line. I could
not yet find out what determines the behaviour. However, even then, Kmail will
eventually crash, when you try to change to a different IMAP-folder. Crash

I hope this information helps. I may say that KDEs Kmail 4.8.3 behaved very
stable - although there were other well known bugs regarding searching and
filtering of mails and the also well known problem of a not working
autocompletion of adresses. But no crashes and strange message as "Could not
access Outbox."
