Closing with invalid, the behaviour changed in recent kmail version.

The step 2 is no longer relevant:
2) I click on folder "Support" (from folder tree) and I'm taken to tab
"Support". In that tab the new messages are not there.

When doing this, the folder content is displayed in the active tab.
