Same problem here with KDE 4.8.

However, it is possible to send mail. After clicking 'send' your mail goes to
your local outbox folder. Then you have to right click the outbox folder and
choose "send queued messages". KMail will ask you if you want to go online, you
click "go online" (or whatever it's written) and your mail will be dispatched.

But this is only a workaround...
