May be, but I still think some contrast is needed.  Another problem is if the
user configures the background color--if the foreground colors of the icons are
hardcoded, there will always be a color selection that will render them
invisible.  This is why I suggested making them match the configured text
foreground color (which the user would presumably set to something readable). 
Alternatively, outlining the shapes of the icons with a contrasting color
border should make them visible enough regardless of background color even if
the colors on the icon graphics must use set colors that cannot be easily
changed on the fly.
