Though my issue is apparently gone (kmail -s "äöü" --body "äöü" seems to work
fine now) I can confirm that Murz's example fails.
$ kmail --version
Qt: 4.8.2
KDE Development Platform: 4.9.00 "release 559"
KMail: 4.9
