I have the same issues. I used to be able to create the search folder and the
folders that I had seem to work. But then, after playing with the search and
getting the error on "persistent search" I deleted it. If I now try to create
the folder, kmail throws me to the "welcome screen". After that, the search
doesn't even work any more! Weird...
