 I made the feature request for KMail (1, 2, ...) as a whole, and at the time
was 'using' kmail1, though I would say, if the feature is not in kmail2, it is
still a valid request.  I personally have not yet migrated to kmail2, so I
cannot comfirm if kmail2 has something similar; howerver, I don't think this
makes the detachment idea any less pertinent.  Does akonadi provide this,
though I thought it was just a search cache of sorts. 
 The detachments idea will free up space as documents (and media files) are
saved out into directories (reducing backup overhead).  I understand the
pitfalls of moving a linked document, or editing so the email links to a newer
'version'. But this is an advanced user feature. I have had some success with
filters, but having the file link in the email needs to be understood by kmail
to make it fully functional.
