I have the same problem with Fedora-16 (kdepim-4.8.2-1.fc16.i686).
This makes the group facility completely useless.
I note that when a contact is added to a group, the entry in
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/distlists
is modified by the addition of a cipher;
but this cipher is not the same as the contact UID.
