I was having exactly this problem with KDE 4.7.1 and then it morphed (I don't
think I changed anything) into the next message will get selected for less than
a second, the message list will redraw, and then some other message (usually
the same one as the last time I deleted a message) is selected.  I think this
is related to Bug 279094.
