Thanks Bernhard for getting back on this.
The actual bug has vanished in the meantime, just when I had set up a clean VM
with a fresh install and started to compare things in the logs from
akonadiconsole :-)

What seems to have helped was a "akonadictl restart", I might not have
restarted my box with the upgraded setup.
