The original report was exactly what I experienced, so that's an odd proposal.

What I forgot to mention was that on reboot, kmail asked me again for the
server password (then everything worked). It was already stored in the wallet
before and indeed it was the one for mailtransport that I removed hoping I
would be asked again about it.
