ran kmail1 on a different box today, turns out there is an invalid email there,
no headers, no body - nothing. and that was unread :-/

not sure what to do with this report, probably I should make it into a bug that
such bogus/broken emails should not be counted in unread status... and of
course they should be shown in the list and not occur in the first place :)
