The results of commands are:
kmail --version
Qt: 4.7.4
KDE Development Platform: 4.7.2 (4.7.2)
KMail: 4.7.2
which kontact
/usr/bin/kontact
which kmail
/usr/bin/kmail

A few additional words:
(1) The problem listed above can be reproduced every time I am clicking on
"Configure Kontact" in the "Settings" menu.
(2) Today, I succeeded to start Kmail and connect to my imap account, but Kmail
is not able to display any mail, giving an error message "IMAP account: Unknown
error. (Unable to append item flags.)". I am now using Thunderbird instead,
which is working fine.
(3) The entire Kubuntu is running in a virtual machine under WMware Workstation
8.0.0 and was originally installed as Version 11.04, then automatically
upgraded to Version 11.10. I was not compiling anything from sources, at least
not consciously.
