Doesn't sound like a kontact or akregator issue if your whole session restarts.

When you encounter this issue again, try this:

When you're back on the kdm login screen, before relogging, go to a tty
(ctrl-alt-F1), log in, make a backup of ~/.xsession-errors

then (typically) alt-F7 to switch back to kdm and relog

This way, you will be able to see what happened.
