Installing it in /usr/local should work.
I don't know why it doesn't work, I'm actually having the same problem as you
now.
What version of KDEPIM are you using? Might be that there is a compatibility
problem with KDEPIM <= 4.4.x.

Meanwhile, I've asked the kde-pim mailing list for help, let's see if anyone
there knows the cause.
