Relevant portion from "startkde" script:

# Make sure that D-Bus is running
if test -z "$XDG_DATA_DIRS"; then
    XDG_DATA_DIRS="`kde4-config --prefix`/share:/usr/share:/usr/local/share"
    export XDG_DATA_DIRS
fi

So you will see issues when KDE is installed in /usr.
