I can report from my tries with kde 4.6.5 and kmail2 on my openSuSE 11.4 system
(icore5 with 8GB RAM). When kmail2 is looking for mail in the background it
becomes slow as hell. I wanted to write a new mail while kmail2 was working
through my four imap servers in order to find new mail. 

When typing the typed letters arrived 3 seconds after that I hit the keys. So
there is a big delay. In between I reverted from kmail2 back to kmail1 and here
I do not have this trouble using the same imap servers. kmail1 just works fine,
no big delays as with kmail2. However kmail1 is still much slower than
thunderbird querying the very same four imap servers.
