this problem surfaces when i'm not connected to a network that can access my
mail server.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open a folder.
2. select a message.

Actual Results:  
message panel is blank.

Expected Results:  
message panel shows cached message or an error message such as "Unable to
retrieve this message.  Verify your network connection.  Do X to enable caching
of messages for offline reading.".

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.35-25-generic
