thanks, i was seeing the same behavior.  when i went into my system settings,
it warned me that the language i had selected was no longer available (or
something like that).  so once i went through and reselected all my
localization settings, the automatic spell checking in kmail seems to work a
lot better now.

here's hoping it keeps working :)
