I can confirm this behavior. It can be triggered by opening a huge (>1MB) PDF
document with okular (did not check if other kde applications also trigger
this).
This bug is very very tedious fr me since I use kmail at work and hae to write
a lot of mails and read a lot of PDFs. 

Here some sys specs:
Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop
2GB RAM 
2.6.36-gentoo-r5 #3 SMP PREEMPT
x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
KDE 4.4.5
KMAIL  1.13.5
